Abstract

ABSTRACT

The Application of Buddha-dhamma for Solving Drug-Problem in the Present Thai Society had three main purposes: (1) to study a situation of the drug problem in the recent Thai Society, (2) to study ways of the drug problem produced by the government, private companies, and the Buddhist organizations, and (3) to study analytically Buddha-dhamma applied to the drug problem in Thai Society produced by the responsible organizations. Thai was a qualitative research to collect all data from the related document and interview in the form of the analytical and descriptive researcher.

A result of this study was found that many types of drugs such as opium, morphine, heroine, hashish, and E (ecstasy) were still spread over the recent Thai societies. The drug addicts were in every age: children, youths, and adults. A number of the drug addict increased in every year. The characteristics of the drug addicts were broken-down, angry, with wearing the glass and the sweater, having immoral friends, and stealing. If they were a student, they requested more money and had a worse result of examination. A main result of this problem came from getting the association with the drug addicts, being sentimental about the friends’ persuasion, and living in bad environment. A number of the drugs were increasing because there were materialism and consumerism that became a fashion in Thai societies until the present time.

Many governmental, private, and Buddhist organizations had many ways to resolve the drug problems. The governmental organizations resolved the drug problems by looking the lookout for the reactant to produce the drug, preventing it along the boundary, suppressing it, curing the addict, and determining the punishment by means of the law. The private organizations used three ways to decrease the want of drugs: legal, healthy and social ways. Finally, the Buddhist organizations resolved the drug problems by instructing people to look out the drugs, consider reasonably the association with persons, and be ambitious in moral development.

The applied Buddha-dhamma to the drug problems in Thai societies started with observing five precepts that helped people to live legally and harmoniously without danger, to behave morally, and to be responsible for their duties with physical development. The mental development was done with looking out the greed, anger and delusion as a main factor to be rapturous with the friend’s persuasion, and living without the drug by means of the strong and emotional stability. Finally, the development of wisdom was to be aware of the friend’s persuasion to take the drug through many affecting factors. When Buddha-dhamma was applied to the life development, the youths and people in the communities were aware of the harm of the drug and benefits of living without the drugs, considered reasonably to take someone as a friend, were conscious of the affecting factors with reducing a number of the taken drugs, and lived without the drugs for ever.
