Abstract

ABSTRACT

This objectives of this thesis are: - 1) to study the building of the Uposatha Hall in Buddhism, 2) to study the process of building the Uposatha Hall at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, and 3) to study the value and significance of building the Uposatha Hall at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University.

The significance of the Uposatha building is used as the place where the monks perform their 4 Sangha Activities, namely :- the chanting of Pâtimokkha, the Kathina robe-making ceremony, the higher ordination ceremony, and the monk rehabilitation ceremony. The formations of these activities are regarded as “Sanghakamma” which can be performed only in the Uposatha Hall with Simas as the boundaries.

The concept about the building up of the Uposatha Hall in Thailand at the early age, was without the constructions of the permanent buildings. There was only the Sima to be the area for performing the Sanghakamma by the monks. Later on, there has been the Uposatha Hall which is of Sima as the boundary. It is not of the big size, but it is just suitable for the monks to perform Uposathakamma.

Form the period of Ayudhaya kingdom up to the present time, Uposatha Hall has been very important in every temple.

Uposatha Hall at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in Ayudhya Province is very important hall to be used as a place for performing the Sangkakamma by the monks students at this University.

The Uposatha Hall in the water pond at Ayudhya Province is the concreted building of the Thai style of double level in the big pond in the area of six Rais. The used upper ground is of 160 square meters and with the land around the Uposatha Hall. The lowerland is the base of the Uposatha Hall of the broad size of 3500 square meters.

The Uposatha Hall in the water is the concreted building consisting of the Buddhist arts including the mental importance, the harmony and the Buddhist stability. This Uposatha Hall in the water is the center of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University.
