Abstract |
ABSTRACT
This study aims at 1) exploring the origin of the Paritta, 2) studying the Buddhist thoughts as appeared in the Paritta, and 3) analyzing the values of Ratanaparitta in Thai society. The findings revealed that the Paritta is for protection of various fears and dangers. There are seven Parittas found in the Pali Tipitaka, six Parittas in Milindapanha, eight Parittas in the commentary texts, whereas three Parittas were newly written. They are in the following order: Mangalasutta, Ratanaparitta, Mettaparitta, Khandhaparitta, Vattakaparitta, Angulimalaparitta, Atanatiyaparitta, Dhajaggaparitta, Moraparitta, Bojjhanga-abhayaparitta, Jayaparitta. At present, they are regarded as ‘Seven Texts’ and ‘Twelve Texts’.
For Ratanaparitta, it is said that the Buddha himself chanted, and suggested Ananda Thera to learn by heart, to chant, and to spread the sacred water over the city of Vesali. As a result, it brought about safety and happiness to the people in Vesali. The form of Ratanaparitta is mixed among the four Pali poems, namely, Indravajira, Upendravajira, Vangsattha, and Indravangsa. The major Buddhist thoughts found therein include Metta (Loving-kindness), Appamada (Heedlessness), Samadhi (Concentration), Dana (Giving), Ariyasacca (Noble Truths), Sangyojana (Fetters), Abhithana (major wrong doings), Kamma, Nibbana and Garava (Reverence). There are more interesting terms to be scrutinized such as Bhuta, 108 persons, Sappurisa, Bhava, Apaya, Kamma, and Bija. The power of Ratanaparitta mainly goes for safety and well-being.
For the values of Ratanaparitta to Thai society, it can be mentioned in fours aspects: 1) it causes values to those who attend and perform the rite and ritual while consecration of the holy water, 2) it is believed that the power of the Triple Gems, result of Kamma, holiness, and profit of worship bring about positive results, 3) Chanting of the Paritta brings about psychic relaxation, well-being, harmony, disappearance of decease, and 4) it is the way of making ten merits.
