Abstract

This thesis on guidelines in conservation of the archaeological site in Wat Maniwanaram, Ubonratchathani province includes 3 objectives:1) to study guidelines in conservation of the Buddhist archaeological site; 2) to study guidelines in conservation of  the Buddhist archaeological site of the monks in Wat Maniwanaram, Ubonratchathani province; and 3) to analyze the guidelines in promoting the conservation of the Buddhist archaeological site of the monks in Wat Maniwanaram, Ubonratchathani province. The participatory action research (PAR) and the purposive sampling method have been used specifically in selecting the populations related to this research.

            Findings of the study:

The guidelines in conservation of Buddhist archaeological sites are under the responsibility of the Fine Arts Department, the Office of Archaeology and the National Museum being in charge of construction sites with historical evidences of crucial communal, social and national artistic values. The essential conservational guidelines are to maintain and protect the sites from damages or demolitions.

In the conservation of the archaeological site in Wat Maniwanaram, Ubonratchathani province, it has been found that beyond other functions of monks, their role in conserving the archaeological site is also vital that is considered as a duty in accordance with the Buddhist disciplines that the Buddha regulated for monks in protecting and maintaining the monastic properties. In addition, it is prescribed by the Thai Sangha Acts that the abbots or governing monks are in charge of conserving the Buddhist archaeological sites.

The guidelines in conservation of the Buddhist archaeological site of the monks in Wat Maniwanaram, Ubonratchathani province are, therefore, the direct duty of Buddhist monks with the participation of related communities in conserving the archaeological site to be sustainable learning source of society and the nation.
