Abstract

The thesis entitled ‘An Analytical Study of Meditation Practice in Line of Phrasubrommayanthera (Kruba Bromma Brahmacakko)’ is of three objectives:
1) to investigate the historical background of Phrasubrommayanthera’s meditation practice, 2) to analyze the meditation practice in line with Phrasubrommayanthera and 3) to explore the influence of meditation practice in line with Phrasubrommayanthera. The study was conducted by the qualitative research method by analyzing the documents and in-depth interview from 12 experts of Buddhist monk and laypeople.

The results revealed that Venerable Phrasubrommayanthera was a meditator who practiced in accord with the Doctrine and Discipline viz., contentment in living a simple life, having loving-kindness and compassion and generosity. He had a sense of modesty and observed the austere practices as 1) one-session’s practice,
 2) forest-dweller’s practice and 3) any-bed-user’s practice.

Regarding the influence of mediation practicing in line with Phrasubrommayanthera, it found that he taught the Samathabhàvanà: concentration development and Vipassanà-bhàvanà: insight development. On the Samathabhàvanà: concentration development, he conducted the practitioner by the method called Buddhànussati or contemplation on the virtues of the Buddha with focusing on breathing in and out, and counting beads. On the Vipassanà-bhàvanà: insight development, he conducted practitioners by Abhiõhapaccavekkhaõa or ideas to be constantly reviewed and considering on Mind and Matter as the Three Characteristics viz.; Aniccatà: impermanence, Dukkhatà: state of suffering and Anattatà: state of being not self or in line with the Satipaññhàna or the four Foundations of Mindfulness;

Regarding the influence of mediation practicing in line with Phrasubrommayanthera, it found that he provided schools for ecclesiastical education viz., Buddhist Sunday School and Pariyattidhamma School for Dhamma and Pali education. In addition, he was a founder of a school named ‘Pariyattidhamma Prommacaksangvornkittikhachonprachasan’ to promote education for monks, novices and students. There were students who graduated from this school become the ecclesiastical officials. Many of the laymen who graduated from this school were government officials and were good examples of society and helped to foster the maintenance of Buddhism.

In terms of increasing the potential of the temple as a meditation center, it was found the sermons preaching on every Buddhist Holy Days, Compose Dhamma Books, Dhamma Lecture, Dhamma Article, and Miscellaneous Dhamma. In addition, the learned monks and novices were promoted to spread the Dhamma in temples, schools, villages and radio stations.  The temple was developed by promoting and supporting the practice of Dhamma and ordinations.

On the promotion of public welfare, all facilities such as monk cells, assembly hall, ordination hall, sermon hall were built inside the temple. In addition, The Monastery Committee also provided financial support to the publics and in Phra Bat Tak Pha village, such as water supply, groundwater and electricity.

In term lifestyle, the people were conducted to live with precaution, having compassion to each other and strict in precepts. They have contentment in living a simple life and help to support each other, with helping the education of monks and novices, poor people and public charity work
