The Process of Readiness Preparation of Temples in Promoting Elderly’s Well-being in Nakhonpathom Province

Abstract

The dissertation consisted of three main objectives, namely: 1) to study the promotion of elderly’s well-being in the temples, Nakhonpathom Province; 2) to study the readiness preparation of temples for promoting elderly’s well-being, Nakhonpathom Province; and 3) to analyze problems, obstacles and trends in readiness preparation of temples for promoting elderly’s well-being. It is conducted by mixed methods: quantitative research, in which the population used in this research, is the 384-elderly people living in Nakhonpathom Province, and qualitative research, in which the data were collected by in-depth interview with 15 key-informants.

The findings of study are as follows:

1) The promotion of elderly’s well-being in temples, Nakhonpathom Province has been found that most respondents were female, with marital status, education level lower than high school, and a career in government service. Their opinions about the promotion of elderly’s well-being in the monasteries, Nakhon Pathom Province have been found that the overall is at the highest level. Having considered each aspect, it has been found that physical well-being was found in the highest level. The physical well-being: you were very satisfied with his sleep; the mental well-being: you always think that life is hopeful; intellectual well-being: helping various charities you do not need to rely on money from son or daughter; and social well-being: people in the community respect you. All aspects have been found in the highest level.

2) The readiness preparation of temples for promoting elderly’s well-being, Nakhonpathom Province has been found that there were 4 preparations for well-being, namely: physical well-being: the elderly does exercise, prevention and treat of health, and regularly check health; mental well-being: the elderly mind is set for acception, be full of faith in ability, opened to learn new things, be optimistic dnd hopeful; social well-being: the elderly feel useful and valuable, be preferred and accepted by society, has a friendly relationship with someone and always share the things or knowledge with others; and intellectual well-being: the word "wisdom therapy" is the application of the Buddhist principles in promoting the elderly’s well-being and the development of 4 aspects by enhancing the spiritual happiness of the elderly according to the Buddhist principles, like donation, obtaining precepts, developing mindfulness, spreading loving-kindness and chanting.

3) The problems and obstacles of the temples in promoting the elderly’s well-being in Nakhonpathom were: the role and importance of the elderly in society are often limited to decline, because it is seen that health is not strong, can cause illness or accident easily, communication with people is difficult, resulting the elderly feeling that they are not useful and burden to son and daughter with reduced work ability and social life at all.

The trends in readiness preparation of temples for promoting elderly’s well-being Nakhonpathom province consists of 8 elements: (1) B = Buddhist principles, (2) L = Learning, (3) P = Permanence (continuous practice), (4) C = Cooperation, (5) C = Community (elderly community), and (6) N = Network, using the abbreviation "BLPCCN".
