Abstract

The thesis entitled “Self-Training based on Buddhist Teachings of Inmates in Lampang Central Prison” consisted of two objectives. The study aimed: 1) to study the self-training based on Buddhist teachings of inmates in Lampang central prison and 2) to propose ways for self-training based on Buddhist teachings of inmates in Lampang central prison. This research used a mixed methodology between quantitative and interview approaches. The research instruments were the closed-end questionnaires and an interview. The research samples were 70 males’ inmates who participated in the moral ethics training program in Lampang Central Prison. The interviewees also include Buddhist monks and the staffs of Lampang Central Prison in total of 10 persons.

The results of the research were as follows:

From the questionnaire, it was found that in term of honesty, the training to be honest with friends who lived together was at the highest level. In term of consciousness, the training to live a sufficient life was at the highest level. In term of perseverance, the training of strength to live life in the prison was at highest level. In term of benefiting others; the practice of readiness and cooperation to work together was at the highest level.

From the interview, it was found that; in term of honesty, the prisoners trained themselves to be honest, and work by adhering to the correctness of the assigned duties; in term of consciousness, the prisoners trained themselves to use reasons to resolve conflicts with others peacefully; in term of perseverance, the prisoners trained themselves to be diligent and behaved in accordance with the disciplines of the prison; in term of benefiting others, the prisoners always trained themselves to realize the benefits to others and the society.

From the study on ways for self-training based on Buddhist teachings of inmates in Lampang Central prison, it was found that the prisoners must train themselves to be honest with their friends who lived together, comply with the regulations by adhering to the correctness, practice sufficient living without using any violence to solve problems, train to be strong in prison, practice in the work that must be done together with others, and ready to sacrifice oneself for any given assignment.
