Abstract

The thesis entitled ‘An Analytical Study on Environmental Concept of Phra Kruba Srivichai Sirivijayo’ consists of three objectives as 1) to investigate the concept of environmental philosophy, 2) to explore the environmental concept of Phra Kruba Srivichai Sirivijayo and 3) to analyze the environmental concept of Phra Kruba Srivichai Sirivijayo. The research was mainly conducted by the documentary research method.

The results revealed that the environmental ethics exist when human have a relationship with nature by seeing, touching and understanding with love and care. The key is that it creates a new Weltanschauung, which is a new concept and feeling for nature and the environment. This means that the new lifestyle must be a simple manner and meaningful which rejects the consumerism and materialism. It is believed that nature and the environment are precious in itself. Man is not the center or master of the world and nature is not human slavery as well. Humans are part of nature as well as plants, animals that are all based on each other. In the holistic view, everything in this natural system is dependent on one another, and most certainly humans cannot separate from the ecosystem. According to the Buddhist philosophical ideal, it emphasizes on love and compassion to all beings. Not only abstain from killing all living beings, but also supports the conservation of life in every way. According to environmental ethics, human beings should be in harmony with nature in the use of natural resources in response to basic factors. They should not harm the natural environment in which they live. Humans should be gentle and do not take advantage of nature. If we follow the doctrine of eco-centric in Buddhist philosophy, we can reduce the environmental crisis.

Regarding Kruba Srivichai, He was the most respected and famous monk in Lanna. He played an important role as a community leader and center of faith. He was widely honored monastic and his guidelines were strictly honorable. He has built and retorted many temples in order to be the heir to the Buddhist age because the way of life of the Lanna people is Buddhism. Construction of the temple is considered to be a source of Buddhist merit. The Buddha taught about charity, morality and mental development or morality, meditation and wisdom to the general Buddhist people for self-development and achieves the ultimate goal viz. Sotàpatti-phala: the Fruition of Stream-Entry, Sakadàgàmi-phala: the Fruition of

Once-Returning, Anàgàmi-phala: the Fruition of Non-Returning and Arahatta-phala: the Fruition of Arahantship. Therefore, Kruba Srivichai has built up a road to Doi Suthep, along with temples for monks and takes care of the environment. it is evident that the concept and teachings of Kruba Srivijaya's actions are important both abstract and concrete.
