Buddhist Mediation: Concept and Tools for Conflict Management 2010

Abstract

The study of Buddhist mediation: concept and tools for conflict management, consists of 3 objectives namely: To study about the concepts and theories of conflict and mediation, to study about the concepts and theories of conflict in Buddhism, and to study both of the concepts and the methods in Buddhism for the creation of the new knowledge of the model of Buddhist mediation which is one of the Buddhist peaceful means to manage the conflict. The research is emphasized on the quality by means of documentary and practical research.  The results of the study are as following:-

                      1. The conflict is the human beings’ nature that is difficult to avoid. In general, the causes of the conflict can be classified according to the external factors in 5 aspects namely:- Data Conflict, Interest Conflict, Relationship Conflict, Structural Conflict, and Value Conflict. Mediation is an alternative method to manage the conflict by participation of the impartial third person who has no authoritative decision making power. The mediator plays the role as the person who gives the advice to the parties and also proposes them the appropriate way to solute the conflict problems so that the parties may work out their own mutually acceptable agreement.

                      2. In Buddhist perspective, the root causes of the conflict are originated from both of the internal factors namely Papañca Dhammas and the unwholesome actions. Ditthi, one of the Papañca Dhammas, is the deepest middle core of the root causes due to attaching the individual ideology. Especially, if the Ditthi involves the unwholesome actions: - greed (Lobha), hatred (Dosa) and delusion (Moha), it will turn out to be the wrong view (Micchāditthi). Internal factors including the external factors are the active forces resulting in the arising of severe conflict situation finally. In Buddhism, the practical ways to manage the conflict are divided into the three parts namely (1) Mediation (2) Abhayadāna and (3) the alternative according to Vinaya methods such as inquiry, compromise, majority and judgment by Sanghasabhā.  

                     3. The concept and the method of Buddhist Mediation are composed of 9 steps namely (1) Mindfulness (2) Education Process (3) Deep Communication  (4) Issues Analysis (5) Approaching to Strategies (6) Thinking Wisely (7)  Interest Finding (8) Option Creating and (9)  New Relationship Building. By all the 9 steps, it is concluded to be the model of Buddhist mediation which is divided into 3 main steps namely (1) step of Kalyānamittra (2) step of Yonisomanasikāra and (3) step of conflict problem management. In the step of Kalyānamittra, the mediator has responsibility for the direct role. However, in the step of Yonisomanasikāra and the conflict management, both of the mediator and the parties have to co-operate in playing the roles in order to cause the Sammāditthi to arise to find out the true interest of each party and also to promote the understanding between them. In conclusion, Buddhist Mediation is strongly recommended as one of the Buddhist peaceful means to be a pattern for solving the conflict problem. It is not only the way to solute the conflict problem but also to build the sustainable relationship such as Abhayadāna which is the crucial target of conflict management in Buddhism.
