AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF ĀRAÑÑIKA DHUTANGA IN THERAVĀDA BUDDHISM : A CASE STUDY OF REVATATHERA 2011

Abstract

The  purposes of this thesis are  1 ) to study the Āraññika Dhutanga in Theravāda Buddhism, 2)to study the practice of Āraññika Dhutanga by Ven.Revatathera and  3) to  study and  analyze  the  Āraññika Dhutanga of Ven. Revatathera that influences Bhikkhus in the Buddha’s period and Thai Bhikkhus at present. From the research it is found that Āraññika Dhutanga in Theravada Buddhism means virtuas organ to terminate the defilement possessed by some monks who regards the forest dwelling as a regular practice  in every 13 Dhutangas which consist of 6 groups namely :- 1) by Group  2) by factor 3) by abbreviation  4) by those who did not study the Dhutangas  5) by persons  6)  by practices.   It is of the objective :- to give the useful Doctrines to the practitioner of  Āraññika Dhutanga which is of the importance that   Buddha   allowed the monks to live  in the forest to make the mental effort up to attaining the path ,the fruit and Nibbana .  The way of practice are to consider which area is the forest or temple . The forest which is far away from last house of about 500 arrows or 1 k.m. if there is the mountain or the river is preventing. Let the monks  measure according to ordinary walking path and come out to receive morning period in the forest . In the Āraññika Dhutanga there are 3  level of practices namely :- stick practice, medium  practice and normal practice.

 There are 7 advantages: - namely  1). the stable concentration 2). the factors to maintain the lives  3). the mindness not be disturb  4). the practiser dose not fear. 5)  the practiser has no remaining affection in life  6). the receiving of happiness from calmness 7) The ability to preserve the others Dhutanga

The Āraññika Dhutanga in Theravada Buddhism are of 3 points namely :- 1. According to the Tripitaka  2. According to Vimuttimagga 3. According to Visuddhimagga

 Ven. Revatathera was the one who observe Āraññika Dhutanga and received admiration  from The Buddha in the position of Eta Dagga in the way of living in the forest as the behavior because he was a disciple who held this practice as a specialist up to his being highest one in living in the forest thus,he receive the highest position among the group of 41 disciple rho receive highest  Eta Dagga.

 He is the highest Venerables in the group of 80 great Disciple , because ne ordain at the period of the first time of enlightenment and become an Aranhanta.

 Ven. Revata’s roles in spreading Buddhism ay the Buddha time are of 4 sides, namely :-1.the Roles influenzing environments  2. the Role  influenzing the human being  3. the Role  influenzing the societies  4. the Role influenzing spreading of Buddhism the mentioned influenzes consisted of forest as instrument for developing the better life.

 The Āraññika Dhutanga practices by Revatathera is the influenze to Thai monks and societies at present in 7 point namely:-   1) to protect the nature  2) to cause the mindfulness to cleary appear, mind be stable,to  cause the defilements to extinguish,to cause the practiser attain the highest doctrine 3) the Thai monks who live in forest began to appear in Sukho Daya period
4) characteristics of land are in compliance with The Buddha’s principles of teaching at miling the living in the forest  5) the characteristics of Songka’s administration brought to the enactment to allow the monks to live in forest as being the Arannavasi Bhikkus. 6) the characteristics of the present societies are limited by preserved forest law. Thus
,the monks are interested in growing the tree in the temple  7) the teaching of the living in forest is the type of practice which is of approvement to be suitable for the present situation.
