Abstract

An Application of Buddhadhamma in Self-reliance: A Case study of MaesaiSacca Saving Group. The study aims to (1) study Buddhadhamma principle on self-reliance according to sustainable economy concept (2) study the application process in Maesaisacca Saving group and (3) study factors and conditions of the Maesaisacca Saving group. The findings reveal that the Buddhadhamma principle which upholds the sustainable economy is Santutthi or contentment. It is a contentment of one’s possession, what one gains and what one be. This is accorded with the His Majesty the King’s speech on sustainability or sustainable economy. It is a moderation leading one to know one’s self and status, enabling one to appropriately manage one own economy. Another Buddhist principle is the Middle Path, the Noble Eightfold Path which gives much emphasis on moderation without being in either extremist way. In seeking for one’s wealth, one does not use entire effort without stopping and in spending wealth,   one is not miserly.  The best way is moderation and middle way.

An establishment of the Maesaisacca Saving Group headed by Venerable Phrarajviriyapon is one of the Sangha’s role  in applying the Buddhist principles in  a practical way. The Buddhist principles are Four Iddhipada (path of accomplishment); (1) Chanda (aspiration), (2) Viriya (exertion), (3) Citta (thoughtfulness), and (4) Vimansa (reasoning). Besides, there are several other principles such as Four Ditthadhamikattha (temporal welfare), Five Bhoga-adiya (uses of possessions), and Noble Eightfold Path. To apply the mentioned principles give rise to four advantages covering economy; production, consumption, distribution, and appropriation. The processes and practices in the Buddhadhamma are conducive to peace and happiness.

The finding also indicates successful life of Maesaisacca community in following Buddhadhamma principles on account of establishment of Maesaisacca Saving Group which leads Maesaisacca community to live together with unity, commiseration, helpful, honesty and happiness
